“It’s not what goes into a man, but what comes out that defiles him” (Matthew 15:11).
Christ shows that the defilement the Pharisees and teachers should fear was not from what entered their mouths as food, but from what was spoken out of their mouths which showed the wickedness of their hearts. It is the heart that is desperately wicked according to Jeremiah 17:9, for there is no sin in word or deed which was not first in the heart. They all come out of the man and are fruits of that wickedness which is in the heart and is produced there.
The heart is considered as the organ of the mouth, that which gives outward expression to inward thoughts and ideas. God is referring to evil words, evil thoughts, and all other types of sin as he explains in Matthew 15:19. The mouth may give utterance to God's praise, words of love, sympathy, and edification but the evil in a man's heart will show itself in his mouth. The open expression will react on the wicked thought and make it more substantial, deadly, and operative in actions and in deeds (Matthew 15:10-11, 15-20 & Mark 7:1-4, 14-23).
Be careful to consider your heart and what’s in it before opening your mouth. Pray and ask God to remove and uproot all the evil and ungodly things that are hidden in your heart because:
Dear Lord, I ask that you remove and uproot all the evil and ungodly things that are hidden in our hearts, in Jesus name. Amen.
